The Foundation

who we are

The "Fundaci鏮 Victoria de los Angeles" is open to Art with a capital letter, in the same way that Victoria de los Angeles herself was sensitive not only to music but also to literature and the fine arts. A sensitivity she knew how to communicate and share, always with generosity, and through the voice, possibly the best if most fragile of all instruments. With this instrument, her technical mastery of it, and her sensibility, Victoria de los Angeles created art that transcended any one musical form, such as opera. Lied, oratorio and the recital were musical manifestations in which the soprano from Barcelona felt most comfortable, and this very early on, from her debut at the Palau de la Msica Catalana, in May 1944. After a brilliant international career spreading over the five continents (always warmly welcomed and loved by audiences of the most prestigious theatres and concert halls the world over) with discretion and, following a recital given 28 December 1997, the small figure of Victoria slipped away via backstage of the huge hall of the National Catalonian Theatre. On 15 January 2005 she slipped away forever, leaving us the gift of a priceless legacy, that of her singing. The versatility of a unique voice, the personality of this once-only woman, and the sensitivity of a human being as beloved as she was discreet, are some of the best virtues defining the character of one who passed through life like the famous lied by Mendelssohn: On Wings of Song". Singing was Victoria de los Angeles's raison d'皻re. For song, she sacrificed her private life, yet knew how to sing of this same life through the music of home and foreign composers, famous and anonymous, always with the same rigour, the same sense of responsibility, sensitivity and art. Hers was an immaculate art which was embraced with fervour unanimously, whether by the most erudite critics or a public devoted to her absolutely exceptional personality. Now it is our turn to be responsible for pushing forward the ship, our Fundaci鏮, which we must keep at a cruising speed in order to carry out a project whose purpose is to perpetuate, in the individual and collective memory, the vital and human testimony, both personal and artistic, of one of the 20th Century's greatest women: Victoria de los 聲geles L鏕ez Garc燰.
